Football
Soccer (also known as association football or soccer) is a team sport played between two teams each with 11 players. It is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world. A ball game, it is played on a rectangular turf, or sometimes artificial turf, with goals at each end of the field. The objective of the game is to score a goal by moving the ball into the opponent's goal; only goalkeepers can use their hands or arms to push the ball on a general game. The team that scores the most goals at the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, a draw will be announced or the game will be extended, depending on the format of the match.
The modern game was codified in England following the formation of the Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game laid the foundations of how the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The most prestigious international football competition is the World Cup, which is held every four years. The event, the most watched and famous in the world, offers twice the spectators of the Summer Olympics.
